일전에 한동안 텍스트베이스 어드벤쳐 게임에 관심을 가졌었다. 나름 바쁜 삶 때문에 제대로 즐기거나 끝을 본 것이 하나도 없었다. 대부분의 어드벤쳐 게임들이 제대로 즐기려면 이것 저것 시행착오를 해 가면서, 필요하면 맵도 직접 그려가면서 하는 많은 시간을 필요로 하는 게임들이기 때문이다. 그렇다고 게임 walkthrough를 생각없이 그냥 따라만 가서는 비록 십여분 안에도 게임을 끝 낼수 있지만 이렇게 해서는 아예 흥미만 잃기 때문에 그런 식으로 게임을 즐기기는 싫었다.

간만에 예전 웹브라우저 북마크 링크들을 조금 뒤적이다가 Colossal Cave Adventure 라는 고전 텍스트 어드벤처 게임의 위키피디아 링크로 연결되었다. 다시한번 위키에 있는 게임 개발 역사를 찬찬히 읽다보니 다시한번 해 보고 싶어진다. 그래도 일단 삶이 바쁘다는 핑계로 여기저기서 walkthrough 들을 찾아보았고 이 부분은 레트로 게임 카테고리에 별도로 포스팅 한다.

텍스트 게임이라고는 하지만 후기에는 IBM PC 도스모드에서 CGA 그래픽과 함께 돌아가는 버전도 있기는 하다. 하지만 오리지널은 어디까지나 텍스트이고 게임 플랫폼도 다양하다. 원하면 초기의 포트란 버전 소스도 구해서 적당한 컴파일러로 컴파일하여 돌려볼 수도 있을 것 같지만 그렇게까지 하기는 너무 심하고...

헌데 초기 게임들은 유닉스 콘솔상에서 돌리는 사진들을 찾을 수 있다. 이런 식으로...

문득 이런 텍스트게임이 리눅스(우분투)에는 없는가 싶어서 구글링을 해 본 결과... 있다! bsdgames 라는 패키지로 쉽게 설치할 수 있다.

$ sudo apt-get install bsdgames

$ adventure

허~ 된다. 그런데 bsdgames 패키지에 뭐가 있는지 궁금해서 또 다시 구글링...

Wow!!! 생각보다 다양한 게임들이 들어있다. 나의 추억의 베이식 프로그램 중 하나인 wump (wumps)나 스타트랙 시뮬레이터 등 무척 다양하다. 

한동안 우분투(리눅스)에서도 즐길 거리가 생겼다.
