You have to enable "USB BIOS" in the bios, to be able to boot from a USB HDD. Once this has been enabled in bios and you have "USB HDD" in the list of boot devices, "USB HDD" will show up when you press F12 during boot. (It actually also says that in the help pane of the bios, when you highlght the "USB HDD" device :-)
